August 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 12:23 pm IST - SALEM:

The police on Thursday registered cases against two persons on the charge of ferrying people across River Cauvery near Kolathur without adopting safety measures.

The Kolathur panchayat union had entrusted the contract of operating motorised boats for transporting people across the river to Veerappan and Perumal.

Villagers, including students, of Pennagaram, Eriyur, Ottanur, and its surrounding villages use the facility. The contractors were not adopting any precautionary measures while operating the boats.

Besides, they were carrying two-wheelers too. Even when the river is on a spate, the contractors were not provided safety jackets.

Even after the district administration, and the police warned the contractors of stringent action, they continued to be negligent.

Following a complaint, the police registered cases against Veerappan and Perumal under Sections 280 IPC (Rash navigation of vessel endangering human life) and 288 IPC (negligent conduct).
