NAGERCOIL

Forest Department personnel recovered the carcass of a five-year-old tigress beyond the ‘zero point’ of Pechiparai dam on Thursday.

Sources in the department said the labourers going to rubber estates near the ‘zero point’ of Pechiparai dam found the carcass and alerted the forest personnel at Kaliyal near Kulasekaram in the district.

Accompanied by veterinarians from Tirunelveli, District Forest Officer Vismiju Viswanathan went to the spot for an on-the-spot investigation. It is suspected that the tigress had hunted down a porcupine and suffered injuries and internal bleeding as it ate the prey having sharp spines.

“The internal bleeding might have caused the death of the tigress three days ago,” the forest personnel said.
