Science camp organised

The Department of Chemistry of Saiva Bhanu Kshatriya College, Aruppukottai, organised a five-day Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research Internship Science Camp-2016, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, from November 16. It was inaugurated by K. Muthuchelian, former Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University. M.V. A. M. Sudhagar, president SBK Educational Agency, presided over the inaugural session. N. Muthuselvan, Principal, welcomed the gathering. S. Natarajan of IISc, Bengaluru, briefed about the objectives of the programme. About 150 students from various schools participated in the programme. The main objective of the camp was to communicate the creative pursuits of science to students and attract talent at an early stage so as to build the required human resource pool for strengthening research and development. Resource persons included T. J. Pandian, National Professor, Indian Science Academy; M. Lakshmanan of Bhrathidasan University; M. Periasamy of University of Hyderabad; N. Chandrasekar of M. S. University; S. Abraham John of Gandhigram Rural Institute; Ravikanth of IIT-Bombay; K. Porszeian of Pondicherry University and K. Sujatha of Lady Doak College. The students also visited science laboratories and carried out hands-on experiments. P. Govindaraj, Programme Coordinator, proposed a vote of thanks.

On translation studies

The Department of English of Devanga Arts College, Aruppukottai, organised a national workshop on “Translation studies : Theory and practice”on October 3 in which 355 teachers and students from 19 colleges participated. The workshop was inaugurated by S. Kanakaraj, former Head, Department of English, Directorate of Distance Education, Madurai Kamaraj University. B. Ravikumar, Principal, delivered the presidential address. M. Karthigai Ganeshan, Head, Department of English, welcomed the participants. J. Samuel Kirubahar of V. H. N. S. N. College, Virudhunagar; M. Palanisamy of Aringar Anna Government Arts and Science College, Karaikal, and R. Dhayalakirshnan of DDE, MK University, were the resource persons. A. M. Kathirkamu, former Dean, Devanga Arts College, delivered the valedictory address. G. Renukadevi, Assistant Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.

'Clean India' camp

Vaigai College of Engineering, Madurai, conducted a 'Clean India' camp at Arittapatti village on November 21. It was inaugurated by V. Joseph Paulraj, Regional Coordinator, Anna University. A. Santhosam, Health Inspector, Primary Health Centre, Therkkutheru delivered a talk on “Dengue.” The Principal, A. Pasumpon Pandian, presided over the event and Vice-Principal P. Sugumaran addressed the gathering. T. Aathinarayanan spoke about “skill development training. ”M. Mahalakshmi welcomed the gathering and R. Jeganathan proposed a vote of thanks. Tree plantation and an awareness rally were conducted as part of the programme.

Avoid use of plastic

About 300 NCC cadets from in and around Madurai participated in a rally organised by Lady Doak College, Madurai, on November 22 to create awareness against the use of plastic materials. The rally was flagged off by Lt. Col. Gajendra Singh, Commanding Officer. Principal Mercy Pushpalatha spoke about the need to create awareness among people to avoid plastic use. The cadets carried placards with messages on the ill-effects of plastic use on the environment. They also cleaned up the campus of Lady Doak College to make it plastic-free.

Trends in geospatial analysis

The Department of Information Technology of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, conducted a training programme on “Trends in geospatial analysis, querying and its tools” from November 14 to 16. It was inaugurated by Krishna Mohan Buddhiraju, Head, Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay. In his address, Dr. Krishna Mohan spoke about research issues in satellite image processing. Sixty five faculty members from various engineering colleges attended the workshop. The other resource persons were T. Revathi, Head, Department of IT, Mepco Schlenk Engineering College; P. K. Joshi of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and Ch. Ramesh Naidu of Vishakapatnam.

‘Big Bang’ workshop

Big Bang, a workshop to kindle interest in science and technology among school children was organised by Vickram College of Engineering, Enathi, in association with Let's Make Engineering Simple Academy, on November 25.

The event was inaugurated by P. Hamsa Priya, Principal, Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School. SR. Vijay Shrenivas, Director, Vickram College of Engineering, in his presidential address, said that the aim of this event was to engage the children with a variety of science concepts in a funny way. Premanand Sethurajan, CEO and founder of LMES Academy, spoke about scientific events and their impact on human life.

M. S. Vikram, joint secretary, proposed a vote of thanks. One hundred and seventy five students from 35 schools in Madurai, Sivaganga and Melur regions participated in the workshop, which featured more than 12 hands-on experiments.
