The Marina Beach was a beehive of activity as personnel from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Chennai Port Trust, along with their families, turned up with brooms and metal scoopers early on Sunday morning to clean the beach.

The beach cleaning activity at the INS Adyar office located near the Napier Bridge was part of the golden jubilee celebration of Indian Navy.

The Eastern Naval Command, Navy Office INS Adyar, has scheduled several events throughout the year starting from April 1 this year to March 31, 2018, as part of ‘Swarn Varsh’ celebrations.

The golden jubilee celebration was kick-started on Sunday with the coastal clean-up drive launched by Rear Admiral Alok Bhatnagar, Flag Officer, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area.

More than 600 Army and Navy personnel along with their families took part in the drive. A large amount of non-bio degradable materials were removed from the beach.
