The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has launched a five day State-wide campaign against atrocities on women.

The campaign is also aimed at creating awareness of women and child-related issues such as protection of girl children from sexual abuse and violence, overcoming drug and liquor addiction, opposition to religion-based, caste-based and gender-based oppression on women and expansion of poverty alleviation schemes. Flagging off the campaign at Malaikkodi here on Tuesday, AIDWA secretary U. Vasuki said that the Centre has enacted a stringent law against persons involved in rape and cases of sexual violence against women and children this year owing to the campaign launched by AIDWA.

The new Act has provision for two years imprisonment for government and police officials who failed to take action based on complaints lodged against persons who indulged in atrocities against women and children.

Police officials should not have any religious or community bias while handling complaints relating to atrocities against women and children, she asserted. Though it was 66 years since India got Independence, the country has not yet got freedom from atrocities against women, Dalits and the under-privileged sections of society.
