Campaign on boiled rice to be launched

February 07, 2013 02:42 am | Updated 02:42 am IST - CHENNAI:

A campaign to create awareness about the health benefits of unpolished rice will be done through the Consumer Protection Council, Food Minister R. Kamaraj told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Replying to Puthiya Tamizhagam member K. Krishnasamy, who wanted to know whether the government would create awareness about unpolished rice, the Minister said a majority of the people in the State consumed boiled rice. Raw rice lacked many nutrients including the aleurone layer. “A major portion of raw rice is starch and is not suitable for diabetic patients. On the other hand, boiled rice absorbs all nutrients when the paddy is soaked in water. Boiled rice is polished even while it is hulled,” he said.
