A traders’ body joined hands with a students’ organisation to urge shopkeepers and public to boycott soft drinks manufactured by multi national companies on Sunday. They also put up stickers on nearly to 100 shops to boycott the soft drinks.

R.B. Gnanavelu, district secretary of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, Vellore, said members of Vellore Anaithu Vanigar Sangam and students’ representatives took out a rally from Mandy Street to Old Bus Stand to create awareness to stop selling and buying soft drinks.

“According to shopkeepers, the sale of Pepsi and Coca Cola has dipped after the traders’ association decided to stop selling these soft drinks. We put up stickers on 100 shops calling for boycott of the soft drinks and revive the Indian economy,” he said.

He added that pamphlets carrying information on the ills of consuming soft drinks were distributed to the public during the rally.

C. Krishnan, president of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, Vellore was present.
