Cameras will be installed in buses plying to Srivaikuntam and surrounding localities by the police soon. The move would help deter crime, Collector M. Ravikumar said here on Monday.
Frequent scuffles between groups of students in buses had triggered caste clashes in the past, causing tension in the region. . College-going students from Srivaikuntam, Murappanadu and adjoining localities used government and private buses to Palayamkottai to reach their institutions.
Even trivial issues involving such students led to caste conflicts . Hence, to identify trouble mongers and prevent any skirmishes, buses plying to and from Srivaikuntam would be equipped with cameras.
Around 30 government buses and some private buses were operated in this route.
Besides, police personnel would be deployed in these buses to monitor the activities of students. . He said the other issue behind caste clashes was cattle grazing. The cattle population in Padmanabamangalam village in Srivaikuntam was high.
To prevent any caste animosities in future, programmes to build social harmony had been planned. Initially, six villages had been identified in Srivaikuntam to build harmony in society, Mr. Ravikumar said
