88 elected unopposed to various posts in Thanjavur district

Byelections to various urban and rural local bodies passed off peacefully across central districts on Thursday.

With the chairperson of the Pudukottai Municipality declared elected unopposed, the bypoll for local bodies in the region did not kick up much heat.

THANAJAVUR: In Thanjavur district, 74 per cent polling was recorded for the bypoll for 13 vacant posts in two village panchayats and 11 village panchayat ward members. A total of 29 candidates were in the fray for the bypoll. Of the 5,610 registered voters, 4,172 cast their votes in the district.

As many as 88 candidates have been elected unopposed to various vacant posts in urban and rural local bodies in the district.

Seventy village panchayat ward members, four village panchayat presidents, six panchayat union ward members, one district panchayat ward member, six town panchayat ward members, and one Corporation councillor have been elected unopposed in the district

Tiruvarur district recorded 80 per cent polling with 3,750 of the total 4,709 voters turning up at nine village panchayats and two town panchayats in the district. The maximum percentage was recorded in Palayankudi village where 189 of the total 210 voters turned up to cast their votes.

KARUR: Brisk poll was witnessed in the byelection to the president of Sembianatham panchayat in Kadavur panchayat union in Karur district.

Of the 4,177 voters, 3,206 cast their votes. Similarly, 75 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the byelection to the 3rd ward member of Velampadi panchayat in Aravakurichi panchayat union. The 9th ward member election in Koyampalli panchayat registered 87 per cent votes, which is the highest in the district

PERAMBALUR: Bypoll was held for nine posts: two ward councillors one each in Perambalur and Veppur unions, three village panchayat presidents, and village panchayat ward members at four other places. As many as 23 persons contested the bypolls.

ARIYALUR: In Ariyalur district, 67.68 per cent of voters turned up for the byelection to the municipal councillor in ward 13. A total of 848 of the total 1,253 voters cast their votes. In rural areas, the polling percentage was 79.78 per cent with 5,723 of the total strength of 7,173 voters casting their votes to the bypoll for the post of three village panchayat presidents and eight village panchayat ward members.

The post of village panchayat president for Karugudi in T.Pazhuvur union remains vacant as no nomination was filed for the post, which is a reserved seat.

NAGAPATTINAM: The bypoll at Mayiladuthurai, Keezayur, and Keezavelur taluks passed off peaceful in Nagapattinam district on Thursday. The overall polling percentage was 74.

Long queues of women were seen casting votes in the poll.
