The National Highways Authority of India has taken up work on laying a by-pass road at Poondi as part of the two-laning of the Nagapattinam - Thanjavur National Highway.
The length of the by-pass will be about two km and will avert the need for vehicles to go via Poondi town.
The by-pass involves construction of a minor bridge to a length of 35 metres across the Vadavar and also five minor culverts. Being a delta region, the two-laning process necessitates construction of new culverts, minor and major bridges.
This is one of the congested areas on this stretch. The work on by-pass would be completed before March and is being executed on a priority basis.
The official also said that the work on laying by-pass at Tiruvarur would be taken up after acquisition of land for a width of 45 metres to a total length of 10 km. The bypass will be laid through Kidarankondan, K. Karai, Vilamal, Kattur and Vadampalayam. The land acquisition proceedings had been initiated at Tiruvarur, sources said. Once the land is acquired and handed over, NHAI would complete the work on the bypass within six months.
