Bus-truck collision kills 11 near Madurai

Eleven people were killed and more than 20 injured when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus and a truck collided head on near T Kallupatti, around 50 kilometres south-west of Madurai, on Saturday afternoon.

Police sources said that the TNSTC bus, going from Tirunelveli to Kumily, was close to M. Subbalapuram near T Kallupatti when the incident happened.

According to the police, ten people, of whom one person was in the truck and the remaining in the bus, were killed on the spot. One passenger was taken to a government hospital in Tirumangalam and later succumbed to injuries.

The injured have been admitted to hospital.

The identity of the deceased and the exact cause of the accident are yet to be ascertained. Police said that more than 20 people had been admitted in hospital and a few are said to be critical.

Senior officials, including Madurai Superintendent of Police Vijayendra S. Bidari have rushed to the spot.
