Passengers of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus had a miraculous escape on Friday as the vehicle was completely destroyed in a fire triggered by suspected electrical short-circuit in the battery.

When the bus, proceeding from Seevalaperi to Tirunelveli Junction, was crossing Fatima Mosque around noon, the fire broke out in the battery and spread to the engine within no time. As thick smoke emanated from the engine, bus driver Vembu alerted the passengers and abandoned the bus in a hurry.

Within the next few minutes, the fire engulfed the entire bus with gutsy winds helping the flames spread. Even before Fire and Rescue Services personnel could reach the spot, the bus was completely destroyed.

Tirunelveli Taluk police have registered a case.
