Tension prevailed for some time at Kandhal on the outskirts of the town on Wednesday following a wildcat strike resorted to by the crew of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses plying between Ooty and Kandhal.
The drivers parked the buses on the road and moved out. Enquiries made by The Hindu revealed that they had resorted to the strike on account of the difficulties they have been facing for some time now due to haphazard parking of private vehicles on the narrow roads and the lack of action by the police to streamline parking.
The grievance of the drivers was that with the parked vehicles and pedestrians occupying most of the space they were not able to drive.
Often they were targeted by the pedestrians and owners of the parked vehicles for brushing against them.
Police sources said that the strike lasted for about an hour.
Called off
It was called off after an assurance was given to the drivers that parking would be streamlined.
Apart from five TNSTC buses, five vans were also plying on the stretch. Owing to the strike and a sudden downpour, commuters, particularly school children, were subjected to considerable inconvenience.
