Even before the police could solve house break-ins and robberies reported a week ago, a fresh serial burglary in the town including the residence of a private nursing college correspondent on Friday night had shocked the residents.
Unidentified miscreants broke open three houses in three different localities – NGO Colony, Muthu Nagar and the neighbouring Cooperative Nagar – and decamped with valuables including gold jewels, cash and an expensive wrist watch.
Police said that when Ramalingam (48) of NGO Colony, Nadar Thottam, a real estate agent, had been to Tirunallar with his family, the neighbours spotted the main door of the house broken. When police spoke over phone to Ramalingam he had claimed to have kept Rs. 25000 cash, nine sovereigns of gold and silver items.
In the second incident reported, the house of Balasubramanian (61), a retired Cooperative bank official, was the target. Enquiries revealed he had gone abroad to visit his daughter after locking his home.
A friend of Balasubramanian, who regularly visited the house, found the locks broken open and the almirah too damaged. The retired bank official had kept Rs. 10,000 cash in the almirah and some valuables.
After committing the crimes, the burglars had hopped over to Cooperative Nagar Second Street and decamped with an expensive wrist watch belonging to one Sabari Indra Gopal (40), who runs a private nursing and catering institute here. Police also said that the burglars had taken away Rs. 65000 in cash and some gold jewels. Investigations revealed that Gopal had gone to the institute with family and returned late in the night. It is likely that the burglars might have committed the crime, sensing that the inmates were away, a police officer, who visited the scene of crime, said.
Though finger prints were lifted, sniffer dog Ruby, which took a scent from the house of Ramalingam stopped it’s chase after sometime, the officer said and added that a tool used to break open the house of Ramalingam had been seized.
Dindigul Taluk police are investigating.
