Owners of private buildings, which are utilised as public buildings, should get licences as per provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Buildings (Licensing) Act, 1965.
The buildings include private schools, colleges, other educational institutions, marriage halls, hotels, hospitals, hostels, theatres, libraries and clubs.
Buildings not less than 100 square metres and utilised by the public everyday should get licence as per the Act. Officials said such licences were mandatory for utilising the building.
Details sought
The Commissionerate of Revenue Administration, Chennai has sought details from district officials on adherence to this rule.
“There are a few pending cases. Hence, we have asked owners of such buildings to obtain licences from the respective tahsildars. These licences are essential to ensure that the buildings are safe for use, to prevent fire accidents and collapse,” a revenue official said.
Those who have not obtained these licences should apply to the tahsildars with the following documents – structural soundness certificate by a recognised civil engineer, sanitary certificate from the public health department, building plan from the local body or recognised department, prescribed licence fees and No Objection Certificate from the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
