Builders and engineers in Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam municipalities were on Monday oriented to septage management by experts of ExNoRa International.

Participants were apprised about sanitation situation in India, present scenario of waste water, septage management initiatives, present models of septic tank / soak pit, and decentralised wastewater treatment approach by V. Ganapathi, Liaison Officer, ExNoRa International; Velliappan, Programme Coordinator; and K. Mohanasundaram, Programme Officer. Gobi Municipal chairperson Revathi Devi also took part.

The training was conducted in the backdrop of the guidelines issued last year by the State Government for proper septage management to prevent unsafe and indiscriminate disposal of sewage collected from septic tanks.

An order was issued for proper designing of the septic tanks, and local body officials are required to inspect compliance to the design, and see through modification of existing tanks wherever required.

In Gobichettipalayam, the sewage from the tanks would be utilised for producing power from the biogas plant that is expected to be commissioned soon, Municipal Commissioner G. Dhanalakshmi said.

The bio-methanisation plant was established to generate energy mainly from wastes collected from fruit and vegetable markets, she added.
