M. Sharanya had a positive outlook towards organ donation. She believed organs should be donated so that the beneficiaries could have a fresh lease of life. And when she died in a road accident on Saturday, her parents overcame their shock and made sure that their daughter’s wish was fulfilled.

The 21-year-old engineer’s organs were harvested after she was declared brain dead at the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital where she was under treatment for over a week for injuries sustained in an accident near Bhavani in Erode district. She was returning with a group of friends after a lecture on career development at a private engineering college near Salem when a lorry collided with the car.

The doctors had told her parents that Sharanya’s brain was damaged and there was a possibility of recovery if a surgery was performed. The doctors did perform the operation but the girl died on Saturday. “Two days prior to the accident, Sharanya got her results. She had passed electronics and communication engineering with 94 per cent,” said her father, K. Manean who is an electrical engineer from Rathinapuri, Coimbatore.

As soon the doctors told them that she was brain-dead, they knew what should be done. “We requested the doctors to harvest her organs. It was not only her wish, but also ours. My wife, Kalamani, readily agreed.”

The doctors at KMCH harvested her eyes, heart valves, liver and kidneys. The eyes were sent to Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, heart valves to Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai, liver to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, and the kidneys were retained at the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, said V. Ramesh, vice president, KMCH.

Her parents believe that their action would do Sharanya proud as the girl was always in the forefront of social causes.

May Her soul Rest in peace. Government has to take necessary steps to avoid such accidents in future

when will the drivers learn to drive on the road and stop causing such tragedies? why the government is not taking adequate measures to stop the rash driving and improve road safety. This is such a tragedy and the best most of the commenters in this forum could do is offering condolences. the driver of the lorry should be hanged (I may be expressing an extreme step but that would make these goons more attentive on the road and stop such tragedies. I am so ashamed and anguished at this tragedy. A budding flower was crushed because someone was sleeping/driving drunk/negligent/never cared for life?

First let us condone the act of donating organs which should become a norm in the future. Second there is no doubt that India has High RTA when compared to western countyr. The solutions are simple but the govt. doesn't have the will to implement it. A PIL pettion is pending in the court for not allowing someone coming out of TASMAC to drive his vehicle which we can see in our great country only. When there are so many call taxis and autos are available, why drunkard people drive and kill so many innocent lives. The driving license and exam is a big joke in our country. There should be a moratorium on vehicles no.s in our road until we expand our roads. There should be a minimum charge of atleast 1 lakh per month if someone wants to own a four wheeler and 10 to 20,000 for 2 wheelers. The politicians won't listen simply because the entire traffic is blocked when they go on the road. Long live Indian democracy.

A tragic end to a budding engineer's life.
Noble cause for the benefit of humanity by donating organs.
Sharnya's and her parents contribution to the social cause needs to be recognized by the government and society.

My eyes are filled with tears when I read the news,I'm sad indeed why God is so cruel at times.I pray, May god bless her Soul with Peace in His Heavenly Abode, and give strength for her parents to bear this unconsolable loss.

First my condolences to the parents of Miss. Sharanya and may her soul Rest in Peace. She and Her parents has done a noble cause which cannot be described by words.

Now can govt bring back the life lost due to an accident. One of the key reasons is the negligent driving and poor road infrastrucutre in our country. Why don't the govt spend money earned from TASMAC n other sources instead of spending on Free TV, Mixie, Grinder n what not..

God please save this country from the miseries...

Such a brave decision in the hour of sorrow, my condolenses to Sharanya's family... RIP Sharanya!

I feel outraged by the fact that these accidents continue to happen unabated and not a single state government has constitued an empowered comitee to look into what needs to be done to fix this menace. Believe me, all we need to is tighten the supply side and make sure we get only quality vehicles to ply on the roads and we make sure only quality drivers handle them.

The way we issue our driver licenses and clear a vehicle as fit does not ensure any of these. We have terrible drivers handling horrible vehicles on great roads with uncontrolled speeds. With zero enforcement coupled with corruption at all levels, something needs to stop somewhere before Road Accidents take the first position as the cause of all unnatural deaths in Tamil Nadu. A fully urbanized and advanced state like TN, with a hard task master CM like Dr J Jayalalitha should take the bull by its horn and save TN !

My heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.
Everybody dies, but very few continue to live. For sure, Sharanya defeated death with the help of her brave parents. Claiming innocent lives, the road network has become killing fields. Corrupt enforcement practices make safety rules a joke. How many lives need to be sacrificed to improve the safety standards? Focusing on driver alone won’t resolve the issue. Over capacity, inappropriate delivery schedule, inconsideration for rest and tolerance to drinking habits are need to be considered. One or more of these factors would have played a role in every accident. Current legal system allows transport owners to escape by blaming drivers. The law should reach the individuals beyond drivers, that includs civic administration for ignoring the safety standards.

Thanks to the media for bringing the burning social issues like donation of limbs / organs of the young diseased for transplanting the necessary organs to the young valuable lives of many by making the specialized department in all DISTRICT HOSPITALS and maintaining a computerized chart of demands and supplies. This demand and supply chart must be published in the website . The POLICE AUTHORITY must cooperate the family members / friends of the diseased by accident cases . The family members may like to see some others are living a healthy life with the help of their beloved dead ones. The HEATH DEPARTMENTS OF CENTRAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS MAY THINK POSITIVELY IN FORMING 1)TRANSPLANTING UNITS IN HOSPITALS,2)IPC RULES CHANGE,IF NECESSARY,TO AVOID UNNECESSARY DELAY/HARASSMENT 3) WEBSITE UPDATING. First, my deep condolence to Sharanya's Family. Hats-off to her parents. She made it proud and it eyeopener for the younger generations. Secondly,I am seeing this in different angle as the accidents rate are higher in India becuase 1) The Traffic Rules are not very strict in India. 2)Either Roads are not good or most drivers doesn't really obey traffic rules because of the corrupted Tranport Ministry. WHY DONT GOV enforce strict law for traffic Vilotions and licensing.

I am now in USA as a visitor.I find that pedestrians are most protected by law and above all by the drivers.Crossing roads are at specific junctions provided with signals to cross. The vehicles(the drivers) stop when they see a pedestrian crossing the road, where there are no signals and wait for the pedestrian to finish crossing. No scolding,no grudges or anything of this sort. When are we going to achieve such a situation in India? Will the Government pay attention?

I feel extremely proud if having Saranya my niece.
She has always been so attached with all those around her, always made
them feel comfortable, I have learnt so much from her during my
earlier days.

I couldnt meet her for about 10 years, still the memories she has left
with me is remarkable, I miss her so much. Yet am very proud of my
Brave Girl.

You always live my dear!!!!

hats off...her act should be a message to our crooked politicians, contractors who take all money and won't lay proper roads, gov't officers how don't inspect the roads, RTOs who issue license without checking the drivers' eligibility, bad people who do organ trading and last but not the least police who take money and ignore misdeeds by drivers. Everyone should do their duties and all are interrelated only then we can avoid from this poor families losing their loved ones. may saranya's soul rest in peace.

Inspite of the sad demise, her "Let Live Life" made everyone of us to overcome the situation. Because of the carelessness of the lorry driver, a 21 year old girl had just lost her life. She is yet to start her career life. She has done a great thing in donating all her organs but we need to think on the other side...though her parents are sportive enough to accept her death and willing to donate their daughter's organs, but they are also a normal parents, they will also feel their daughter's absence. Its really bad. Is there any ways to avoid accidents? Even we drive or follow the safety measures, the opposite person don't do it. Its the innocent lives going away...Where can we ask for help??? Any side of the city/Sate we turn around, we hear a lot of accidents. There is no safe and each day is a challenge for us on the road. Morning - Night, we see and face lot of accidents. People don't follow and there is no strict measures taken for those who take the lives easily...
Its Kaliyug...

So sad to hear that a budding engineer was nipped to death. But why are the accidents rates increasing and claiming so many young lives recently. Is the government trying to do something to reduce accidents aprat from advertising for helmets or doing the talking rather than including speed camera's, punishing/revoking license of errant/drunk drivers, confesticating overloaded lorries & even public buses .... Until its done in more systematic & strenious manner, we would see more young lives being lost around us.
