The Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (THAMBRAAS) has sought due representation for Brahmins in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, said N.Narayanan, State president of the association, here on Sunday.
Talking to media persons after participating in the State general body meeting of the association, Mr. Narayanan said that a resolution in this regard was passed at the meeting. He pointed out that the association would take a step as per the directives of the State executive of the association with regard to extending support to any alliance in the ensuing Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.
Mr Narayanan said that the association passed a resolution demanding the State government for 10 per cent reservation for forward communities in education and employment and 20 per cent was sought by the association at the national level. A resolution demanded administration of temples in Tamil Nadu by an independent board without any political interference.
He pointed out that a resolution was passed welcoming the caste-based census and appealed to the Brahmins to co-operate in the census operations. He appealed to the members of the Brahmin community to register their names in the voters list for the Graduates and Teachers constituencies.
The association is gaining strength day by day and THAMBRAAS had 600 branches in all the districts in the State. Nearly 20 per cent of its welfare assistance went to the economically weaker sections of other communities. The Brahmin population in Tamil Nadu is 6.75 per cent and it is 16.5 per cent at national level. R.Rajamani, State vice-president and also Tiruchi district president of the association, presided over the meeting.
