Family members and relatives of a seven-year-old girl brutally beat up a teenage boy for allegedly sexually assaulting the girl at Soorangkottai near here.
The police have booked the boy under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Police said a week after the alleged sexual assault, the relatives of the girl picked the boy, studying in a local school, from his house on Tuesday morning, beat him up causing serious injuries and dumped him at a “kanmai” (water body), fearing that he was dead.
A passerby, who found the boy struggling for life, dropped him in front of a police station near the Government Headquarter Hospital here in the evening.
The boy’s mother, who came to the police station to lodge a complaint, found her injured son and admitted him to hospital.
As the condition of the boy became serious, he was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, the police said.
Police enquiries revealed that the alleged sexual assault happened on December 17, but the girl’s side did not bring it to the notice of the police.
After a petty quarrel between the families of the girl and the boy on Tuesday, relatives of the girl thrashed the boy. They also lodged a complaint against him with the police.
Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan, who deputed the local Deputy Superintendent of Police to enquire into the matter, said initial investigation showed that the boy had sexually assaulted the girl and an FIR was filed against him.
The boy was charged under Section 4 of POCSO Act.
He would be arrested after being discharged from the hospital, he added.
Police said based on a complaint given by the boy's father, the police filed an FIR against six people and relatives of the girl.
All of them were absconding, the police added.
