The setting up of bone banks in India will become a reality soon, said S.K.S. Marya, president-elect, Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) on Wednesday.
Addressing the inaugural function of 57th Annual Conference of IOA (IOACON 2012), he said the association had submitted its recommendations to the Centre to have some kind of law for setting up bone banks on the lines of eye banks. Besides, the legislation would define how to use spare bones legally.
Health Minister V.S. Vijay handed over the Dr. B. Mukhopadhaya Lifettime achievement award 2012 to S.M. Tuli and Honorary Fellowship to S. Soundarapandian.
IOA president S. Rajasekaran and secretary Sudhir K. Kapoor presented Professional Excellence awards to Shailendra Bhattacharya and K.H. Sancheti and honorary fellowship to P.S, Maini.
J. Radhakrishnan, Principal Health Secretary, said the State government was building capacities in trauma care. Ashok Gupta, Board of Governors, Medical Council of India, urged hospitals to provide treatment to road accident victims on a priority basis.
Mayilvahanan Natarajan, IOACON 2012 organising secretary, said about 3,500 delegates and 1,000 trade delegates from various countries would take part in the conference.
