Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Muralidhar Rao on Friday announced that the party will go it alone in the local body polls in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing journalists before participating in the party’s state executive committee meeting here, he said the objective was to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and extend the party’s reach among the people.

“Our main aim is to take welfare programmes of the Central government to every nook and cranny of the country. BJP president Amit Shah will visit Tamil Nadu in the first or second week of July to meet cadres in connection with the local body polls,” he added.

Reacting to the party’s rout in the recent Assembly election, he said that it was not a failure for the party.

“We have not performed up to the expectations of the people. But we had performed well in the last Lok Sabha polls in the State and we won (in Kanyakumari). This time, we failed to win. In a multi-cornered contest, BJP’s well wishers have favoured one or the other Dravidian party. But we garnered sizable votes. Our performance in Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai was very impressive. The BJP’s performance was extraordinary in Chennai,” he said.

BJP State president Thamilisai Soundararajan said while the party would appreciate the good schemes of the Tamil Nadu government, it would not shy away from pinpointing the anti-people policies. For example, several Tasmac liquor shops that were located near the schools, temples and places of public gathering were not closed in the first phase, she pointed out.

Commenting on the recent Assembly proceedings, she said both Dravidian parties failed to discuss the immediate needs of the people.
