Bird flu: Collector reviews steps taken

As a precautionary measure to prevent outbreak of bird flu in Namakkal district, poultry farmers here were asked to avoid from procuring birds, eggs, ducks and feeds from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

Following outbreak of bird flu in Bidar district of Karnataka, Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy held a preparatory meeting with poultry farm owners and egg manufacturers at Collectorate on Thursday.

He said that all precautionary measures need to be taken by the poultry farmers so that there is no outbreak of the disease in the district.

He asked the farmers to avoid procuring poultry chicks, birds, ducks, eggs and poultry feed from these three States.

These can be brought from other States after certification by veterinarians, he added.

The Collector asked the farmers to establish footpath with disinfects so that the virus do not enter the poultry sheds. He also asked farmers to inform the veterinarians if unusual death of birds was found or symptoms found in birds.

As many as 45 Rapid Response Teams were formed in the district to monitor all the poultry farms, he added.

He asked all the farm owners to instruct their workers to dip their legs in disinfects, both before and after entering the sheds.

Visits

The collector also asked not to allow strangers in the premises and also ensure all measures are in place to prevent the outbreak.

Also, officials of the Animal Husbandry and local bodies were asked to monitor sale of meat and also ensure dead birds are disposed according to procedure. Mr. Dakshinamoorthy later visited few poultry farms on the outskirts of the town and reviewed the precautionary measures in place.

District Revenue Officer K. Palanisamy, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Department Dr. K. Ramalingam and others participated.
