Fifty rapid response teams have been formed to monitor the 1,100 poultry farms in the district, following the bird flu alert sounded across Karnataka.

Bird flu was reported in a private poultry farm at Melkera village in Bidar district in Karnataka and 1.5 lakh chickens were culled.

The district administration has formed 50 teams to monitor the farms. About four crore chickens were reared in the district for eggs and meat. Samples were taken from poultry and tested at the laboratory. On May 12, the district administration held a meeting with owners of poultry farms.

Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy asked officials to continue the measures that were already in place. “Farm owners should step-up vigil of potential source of infection,” he added.
