About 40 members of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) were arrested when they blocked Begampur Road with black flags here on Saturday, condemning visit of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy.

They tried to show black flags to Dr. Swamy who visited the city to take part in a conference at RVS College of Engineering and Technology in the afternoon. The protestors also raised slogans against the BJP leader.

‘Swamy against fishermen’

Addressing the gathering, TMMK deputy secretary Jamaluddhin alleged that Dr. Swamy had been functioning against fishermen in Tamil Nadu and the minorities. The State government should initiate action on the basis of several cases pending against him.

The TMMK members also condemned the college management that invited the BJP leader for the conference.

Tension gripped Bagampur area as a large number of police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
