“It is the best birthday gift I ever had in my life.” This was how Chief Minister Jayalalithaa [whose birthday falls on Sunday as per Roman calendar] reacted after the Union government notified the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the gazette on Wednesday.
Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal report (Gazette Notification)
Talking to reporters at the secretariat, she said it was a great victory to her and her government and the happiest day for the farmers of Tamil Nadu, especially the farmers of the Cauvery Delta region. In her 30-year-long political life, she said “I have a sense of fulfilment and achievement today because we have secured Tamil Nadu’s rights over the Cauvery water.”
As the order has been notified, it would be binding on the Karnataka government, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said the notification was culmination of the long struggle she had been waging for the last 23 years since she assumed office as the Chief Minister for the first time in 1991.
Ms. Jayalalithaa recalled her fast in July 1993 emanding the creation of an implementation mechanism for the interim order.

While Karnataka cries TN jumps with joy.
Sorry plight!
The only best solution for the interest of all Indians is to inter connect
all the rivers and regulate properly as like as the one in US Missipi
misousari.
It is indeed a good news for the country as a whole. The rivers should be nationalized immediately and the central
government, without any political bias, should use them for the states
as per their requirement. When there are well established
international mechanisms to sort out water disputes between two
nations, it is really a shame that several states in India are
fighting to share the most precious natural resource common to all
the citizens. If not taken seriously and tackled properly, the water
fight in future will be the most important threat to the unity of this
great nation. Let us pray that sense prevails among all concerned.
..The fact that TN has to be at the mercy of Karnataka led to the un-
necessary Cauvery Conflict. Neithr BJP nor Congress has come forward
to look at things in correct perspective.
Possible Solutions :
1. This is the beginning and not the end. Karnataka has time AGAIN
spoken against SC. It is because of jaya this at least was possible
to get notification Gazetted
2. Karunanindhi could have done easily when he had absolute power at
the center and congress Government at the center at the mercy of
Karuna but he failed to act for reasons best known to him and his
family 3. TN should act quickly to desilt the tanks ,dams ,Lakes and
other water sources with the help of territorial army and if possible
with the Army as in Lanka 4 Alternate cultivation in Delata area
,Sprinkler irigation ,not wasting water etc are to be implemented in
TN 5 How karnataka is going to act is to be watched .6 Finally law
alone can't solve all problems . Both Karnataka and TN should act in
friendly manner.
Its definitely a final decision Mr.Bharat. Interconnect of rivers cannot be an argument against
this ruling. It definitely is a moment of truth in TN's fight for its right of kaveri river. Kudos to
the CM.
It has been fight for 20 long years. Full Credit goes to Jayalalithaa
for making this happen. This should be seen on par with King
Bhagiratha's effort.
The first time she agitated against the central government's inaction
was in 1993, when she went on to an indefinite fast. At that time
Prime Minister Rao dispatched Pres. Venkatraman.
All round re charging of ground water is the most urgent task on hand.
CM should enthuse / cajole the citizenry to take it up with ZEAL.
It is good for TN CM but she should achieve in other spears like power supply. These improvements and others will lead her to achieve the 40 MP seats.
Its indeed a great achievement/gift worth millions of lives. Its a good show by the
Tamilnadu government sustaining, in legal terms, until the opponent is trying out all
the options at their end. God bless real stakeholders of Cauvery water !
It may be a great news however, it is not final until the rivers are
nationalized and interconnected. If Ms. Jayalalitha could bring the
other states to an agreement it'll be a great achievement, which would
likely etch her name in the Indian political history on par with other
luminaries.
Further, I would strongly urge the TN Govt. not to become complacent
but to look into the causes of water scarcity (exploding population,
wastage from industries, etc.) and address them as well as developing
alternative water sources like sea water desalination and water
purification for reuse.
