Be ready to safeguard people, Collector tells officials

Collector S Natarajan has instructed officials of various departments to take all precautionary measures to safeguard people during the north east monsoon.

Addressing a meeting here on Wednesday, he advised the Public Works Department officials to keep ready sufficient sand bags and avert floods whenever there were breaches in water bodies. Stating that the monsoon is set for October, he said workers in the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) should be in a state of readiness to address power failure problems during the rainy season. They should coordinate with other department workers and immediately remove trees on roads or live wires to ensure normal life was not affected.

Those engaged in relief and rescue operations should keep ready shelters and relief centres for shifting flood affected people and stock sufficient quantity of ration items. They should keep sufficient stock of fuels such as petrol, diesel and cooking gas, he said.

Mr. Natarajan advised the public health department officials to take steps to prevent spread of water borne and communicable diseases. They should take all precautionary measures to prevent virus attack during the monsoon period and ensure that water did not stagnate at dumping yards and drainage channels. They should chlorinate the drinking water sources and all the Primary health centres in the district should have adequate stock of medicines, he said. District Revenue Officer M Ali Akbar, Sub Collector (Paramakudi) G S Sameeran, Revenue Divisional Officer (Ramanathapuram) Ramapradeepan were among other officials present in the meeting.
