Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday gave away battery-operated tricycles to 100 differently-abled students. An order for providing 761 such vehicles, totally costing Rs.1.7 crore, had been issued.

Initially, 100 students, hailing from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Vellore districts, were given the vehicles free of cost.

The Chief Minister also distributed compact discs (CDs) and CD players to 50 visually-challenged high and higher secondary students to enable them pursue their studies. The government had sanctioned Rs.3.09 lakh for distributing the CDs and CD players free of cost to 124 such students. He handed over appointment orders to 60 differently-abled persons on their selection as secondary grade teachers in primary schools. Geetha Jeevan, Social Welfare Minister, Thangam Thennarasu, School Education Minister, K. Shanmugam, Principal Secretary (Finance), S.S. Jawahar, Secretary of the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons Department, were present.
