Chief Minister Jayalalithaa opened a Rs. 234-crore barrage constructed by the Public Works Department across the Cauvery at Mayanur in Krishnarayapuram taluk of Karur district.

The barrage, built closer to the Kattalai barrage, will help to store 1.05 tmc ft of water, thus recharging the groundwater in the area.

It is also meant to divert seven tmc ft of floodwater from the Cauvery to the Gundar through a 258-km canal.


Launching several facilities across the State through videoconference on Wednesday, Ms. Jayalalithaa inaugurated a Rs. 90-crore auditorium at the Stanley Medical College in Chennai, besides other schemes at the Salem and Coimbatore General Hospitals.

In order to broaden the benefits of 104 Medical Assistance Scheme, she handed over 2,580 mobile phones, costing Rs. 63 lakh, to the Health Department.

To help merchants avail themselves of the licence for food trade, the Designated Officers and 310 Food Safety Officers were provided with tablets at a cost of Rs. 87.97 lakh.

The Chief Minister also launched 30 air-conditioned mini-ambulances, with collapsible stretchers, purchased at a cost of Rs. 3.11 crore, besides 40 ambulances purchased at a cost of Rs. 40 crore for widening the reach of the 108 service.

School at Kothagiri

On Thursday, she inaugurated buildings for the Kothagiri cooperative store-fair price shop and panchayat union primary school in Kodanad Estate of The Nilgiris district.

They were built at a cost of Rs.33.5 lakh. The school building has four classrooms with a kitchen.
