A baggage scanner has been installed at the Central Prison, Kalapet. The machine, which can detect explosives, narcotics, arms and ammunition, was inaugurated by Home Minister E. Valsaraj on Wednesday.

The equipment, installed at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh, can provide colour coding so that prohibited items can be identified easily.

Mr. Valsaraj said that cell phone jammers would be installed at the prison in two months. Order had been placed with Bharat Electronics Limited to supply jammers, he said.

Chief Secretary R. Chandramohan and Inspector General (Prisons) Pankaj Kumar Jha were present

Mr. Valsaraj said in a release that a video conferencing system linking the Puducherry court and other courts in Tamil Nadu with the Central Prison and sub jails at Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam was being contemplated.
