Avoid panic

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST

This has reference to the news in The Hindu dated February 23, 2015 about NTPL’s first unit that may be commissioned by March. Yes, the thunderous venting of steam heard approximately for about three km for three or four times a day for the last fortnight is a proof to this.

Since last fortnight the high decibel level roaring has been on. This is very common during the pre-commissioning. The mute point is, public living around should have been taken into confidence in advance to avoid panic and chaos because of this venting. TNPCB should have been asked to monitor the decibel level. A thin blanket of black soot is observed in open terrace and in the greenery around. It is very sad to note that the enforcing authorities seldom act in advance to assure the public. They wait till a protest emerges. I appeal to all the stakeholders concerned to act in advance to inform the public.

Unhygienic scenario

The new bus stand (Dr. MGR bus stand) at Tirunelveli of late lacks in sanitation.

It is a main hub and nearly 10,000 passengers visit daily. At present, most of the passengers are using the open space wherever available inside the bus stand as an urinal without any restriction, for which the following may be the reasons. The public toilet, maintained by the corporation, is inadequate and the passengers are disinclined to use the private toilets as the private operators are charging exorbitantly.

Considering our ‘Clean India’ policy, the officials concerned may please take suitable remedial steps to keep the place free from infection.

Expand bridge

The National Highway roads No.7 and 7A connecting Banaras, Bangalore and Kanyakumari and Tuticorin-Quilon passes through Tirunelveli Corporation area. This is the only connecting road between Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai towns.

This road was laid during the Queen Mangama days. During the British rule, one noble person called Sulochanna Mudaliar had constructed an overbridge across the Tambaraparani with his own funds. Since the level of this river bridge was over 25 feet to facilitate movement of vehicle, he also constructed a small bridge over a drainage channel on the eastern side of the river. Now, the number of vehicles increased and that more than 2 lakh vehicles cross this small bridge daily. The width of this road is about 20 feet. The National Highway has not proposed additional construction on either side of the bridge for easy vehicle traffic for pedestrians. The public expect officials to expand the bridge.

Pig menace

Pigs are moving around Adhi Parasakthi Nagar on the outskirts of Tuticorin. Children are afraid of playing on streets due to the pig menace. The municipal authorities should eradicate this problem.

Use litter bins

There is stray dog menace in Tirunelveli Junction Railway Station.

Passengers are scared by dogs since there is nobody to get rid of them.

The travelling public fail to use the litter bins placed on the platform. Though Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in the budget address said that station infrastructure and cleanliness would be given priority, it is up to passengers to keep the platforms clean to get rid of stray dogs.

Damaged road

Recently I have been to Ozhuginasery and Kuzhithurai (near Marthandam) in Kanyakumari district. To begin with, there is a market area in Ozhuginasery and this area is full of pits and potholes. People are put to inconvenience apart from being at the risk of being hit by vehicles that zip through the area.

Hence, I request authorities to repair the stretch of Ozhuginasery market area besides resolving the traffic woes.
