Autorickshaw drivers went on a day’s strike in Chengam on Wednesday in protest against police attack on their colleague Raja and his son Surya on Monday.

Three policemen allegedly rounded up Raja in a public place in Chengam and attacked him with lathis after he challenged their intervention in a quarrel between him and his wife Usha. His son Surya (17), who attempted to prevent policemen from attacking his father, was also attacked. The woman pleaded with the police not to attack her husband and son but in vain.

Condemning the incident, 140-odd autorickshaw drivers in Chengam struck work from 6 a.m. till 6 pm on Wednesday. .

Meanwhile, Tiruvannamalai Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) R. Uma Maheswari started an enquiry into the incident based on Collector A.Gnanasekaran’s order.
