AUT not for more unitary universities

Conversion of colleges to unitary universities need not increase the Gross Enrolment Rate (GER), the Association of University Teachers (AUT) has said.

In a release, S. Pannirselvam, general secretary, AUT, stated that the report of the V.C. Kulandai Swamy committee had suggested conversion of many colleges in the State into unitary universities to solve the problem of low GER.

However, this would not be the case without the State and Centre investing more in education, he said.

Dr. Pannirselvam added that the creation of unitary universities would be detrimental to all stakeholders as these institutions would be outside the purview of the government and hence it would be difficult to monitor fee structure, social policy issues and service conditions of employees.
