The Anna University on Wednesday released a rank list of its affiliated colleges and a list of colleges with similar sounding names on its website.
The ranking is based on the pass percentage of three semesters, beginning November-December 2012 to till date, according to the website.
Professors in the university say the list is only an indication of academic performance in the last few semesters.
The ranking was released following a High Court judgment that directed the university to publish the academic performance of the colleges and the pass percentages of 506 non-autonomous colleges for the December-January 2012, April-May 2013 and December-January 2013 semesters.
Only three institutions in and around Chennai figure in the top 10 list – Sri Sairam Engineering College, Sri Sai Ram Institute of Technology and Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering. Apart from this, two other colleges also find place in the top 20, Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College and R.M.D. Engineering College. The list is available at

Colleges and experts, however, feel that the ranking is not enough for students to choose their colleges during the counselling.
“There are other criteria such as infrastructure and environment conducive to the students and faculty should also be considered,” says K.S. Babai, principal and secretary of the Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College.
Kala Vijayakumar, president of the SSN Institutions, says the ranking will help students to identify the colleges that are not up to the mark.
