The Assembly on Monday adopted a unanimous resolution demanding that the new domestic terminal at the Chennai airport be named after former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.

It was proposed by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Explaining the background, the Chief Minister said that in a recent letter, the Union Civil Aviation Minister informed her that if the State government wanted to name the new domestic terminal at the Chennai airport after MGR, the Centre should receive a resolution passed by the Assembly. Then, the Union government, with the consent of the Cabinet Committee, could consider the proposal. Hence, the resolution was brought in the Assembly, she said.

She said the new terminals were constructed at a cost of Rs 2,015 crore and was inaugurated by Vice President Hamid Ansari on January 31 this year. However, her earlier request to name it after M.G. Ramachandran was not heeded. As a mark of protest, she received the Vice President at the airport as per protocol, but boycotted the function thereafter. She also made it clear through a release to the media the reasons for not attending the function, she added.
