DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday wanted the State Government to ascertain reports of retail giant Walmart planning to rope in retail traders as part of its business plans.

According to the reports, retail giant Walmart acquired seven acres of land at Vanagaram for a commercial complex and set up an office at Anna Nagar.

It was making an offer to the retail traders that it would supply to them goods at a cheaper rate.

In this context, he referred to the opposition of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail sector.

Later in the day, talking to reporters, he alleged that the renovated MGR memorial was inaugurated in a “hurried manner” because a petition objecting to the erection of “two leaves” had been filed in the Madras High Court.
