A spacious old age home with day care centre for senior citizens constructed with financial assistance from Japan at Vilvarayanallur near Madurantakam was declared open by the Consul General of Japan, Chennai, Masanori Nakano.

Japan has released a grant of Rs.43.96 lakh under the grass root projects scheme towards construction of 7350 sq.ft building by the Duraisamy Generous Social Education Association, Vilvarayanallur.

According to an association press release, new building, constructed at a total cost of Rs.52.70 lakh, has 13 rooms apart from a spacious hall on the first floor for running day care centre for senior citizens.

The objective of starting the day care centre was to help elderly people, especially women and handicapped, overcome the feeling of loneliness they experience during day time at their homes.

Hitherto the association runs its old age home with 30 inmates at an old tiled house in the hamlet, according to association chairman V. Krishnamurthi.
