Arrested for bid to block trains

A total of 30 Shiv Sena activists were arrested here on Sunday when they attempted to block trains heading to Kerala to express their dissent over the Kerala Government's stance on the Mullaperiyar dam and Pambar dam issues, among others.

Shiva Sena district president K. V. Saravanan, who led the agitation, said that the legislation, enacted by the Kerala Government preventing the level of water in Mullaperiyar from being raised to 142 feet was against the interests of farmers in Tamil Nadu.

He criticised the plans conceptualised by the Kerala Government to construct a new dam across the Mullaperiyar.

Similarly, the agitators came down on the dam planned across the Pambar river, stating that such construction would affect the riparian rights of farmers along the course of the Amaravathy river in the district since Pambar feeds water into the Amaravathy river.
