Students took out an awareness rally here on Tuesday in connection with National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness Week.

After Mayor E. Bhuvaneshwari flagged off the rally at Corporation Ground in the presence of M.G. Kulandaivel, District Revenue Officer, the students reached the starting point after traversing four car streets around Swamy Nellaiyappar Temple.

The rallyists carried placards with awareness messages on rainwater harvesting, judicious use of drinking water, ensuring better sanitation in the surroundings etc.

Following the awareness rally organised in the district headquarters, similar exercises will be conducted in all 19 panchayat unions on Wednesday (June 29) and training of testing water samples will be given to science teachers and pump operators in the unions on Thursday.

On July 1, 2 and 3, arrangements have been made to test the water quality at the collection points itself.

“We’ve set a target of testing 19,000 samples (1,000 samples in each union) during this celebration,” said Mr. Kulandaivel.
