The portrayal of achievements of Srinivasa Ramanujan, mathematician, and Alagappa Chettiar, industrialist-philanthropist, and the indigenously-manufactured Arjun battle tank are among the highlights of this year’s exhibition of the ongoing 98th Indian Science Congress.
The contributions of the mathematician and industrialist-philanthropist have been featured in the Hall of Pride section of the exhibition, “Pride of India,” being held at the SRM University in Kattankulathur, about 40 km from here.
The battle tank, ready for dispatch, is turning out to be the main attraction for a number of students and younger people, who are keen on getting themselves photographed in the backdrop of the tank.
The stall of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is another major draw for the student community.
There are pavilions such as Special Pavilion and Best State Pavilion which throw light on higher education and achievements and initiatives of States. Over 15 institutions of higher learning such as IIT Madras, Indira Gandhi National Open University and SRM University are part of the Special Pavilion, ‘Eduvision.’ Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala and Uttarakhand have been featured in the Best State Pavilion.
The major exhibitors include the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, Union Ministry of Mines and the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), apart from organisations such as Power Grid Corporation of India, Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
