A.P. takes lessons from Amma Canteen

Anna Canteens will cater cuisine endemic to each region

September 20, 2014 02:08 am | Updated 02:08 am IST - CHENNAI:

Andhra Pradesh’s Anna Canteens, modelled on Tamil Nadu’s Amma Canteens, are likely to be launched in November.

The menu at these subsidised canteens is likely to vary with each region.

A group of ministers and officials from Andhra Pradesh visited Amma Canteens in Chennai on Friday to study the model adopted by Tamil Nadu.

“We are planning to offer people of each region food unique to their area. For example, people in Rayalaseema may not like pongal. We may finalise Ragi Sangati instead. Decisions will be made according to people’s will and wish,” said an official who visited an Amma Canteen in Chennai.

Survey

“A survey of local body representatives in Andhra Pradesh will be done in each of the regions. The State government will finalise the menu shortly,” said the official.

The ministers who visited Amma Canteens in Chennai include Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Paritala Sunitha, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P. Narayana and Minister for Agriculture Prattipati Pulla Rao.

Andhra Pradesh officials, including Director of Municipal Administration Vani Mohan, Director of Civil Supplies G. Ravi Babu, Ananthapur District Collector M.V. Soloman Arokia Raj, Vishakhapatnam Joint Collector Praveen Kumar, Guntur District Collector Kanthilal Dande and Chittoor District Collector Sidhartha Jain visited Amma Canteens and studied the system adopted by Chennai Corporation for implementation of the welfare scheme.

Five for now

Andhra Pradesh proposes to start five Anna Canteens in Ananthapur, 15 in Vishakhapatnam, 10 in Guntur and five in Chittoor, a representative of the group said.
