Anti-plagiarism software commissioned at Periyar University

UGC has offered software free to 100 universities in India

The anti-plagiarism software, sanctioned by University Grants Commission, was recently commissioned by Vice-Cnancellor C. Swaminathan at Periyar University here.

Knowledge encroachment and literary theft are some of the lingering issues in research areas across the world. Particularly, plagiarism is a persisting problem among the student community. 

To avoid plagiarism in research, UGC has offered anti-plagiarism software free of cost to 100 universities in India.

Research

On the occasion, Mr. Swaminathan said the initiative of UGC was a welcome development in promotion of research in higher education and thwart plagiarists.

He urged the faculty and the research scholars to go for original research.

If researchers were and had integrity in their work, there would be no need for the plagiarism detection software, he added  

The Vice-Chancellor said that over the past few years, promotion of research in Periyar University had enormously helped the University amplify its standard.

NAAC accreditation

It had obtained the NAAC accreditation with ‘A’ (3.15 out of 4 points) by the UGC.

He said in the past five years, 302 students were awarded Doctor of Philosophy in various disciplines and 1,439 were awarded Master of Philosophy in Periyar University.

A total of 106 research projects were completed by the faculty with various funding agencies and 101 books and 3,017 articles had been published in leading periodicals across the world and out of which 1,180 were Scopus cited, the Vice-Chancellor added.

The given anti-plagiarism software is called URKUND. It is managed by an European-based INFLIBNET Center in Ahmedabad.

It is available at the Periyar University Library for plagiarism-detection purposes and the faculty members may avail themselves of it by logging in their username, explained the university librarian, Mr. Subramanian.
