A two-year-old boy fell into an abandoned borewell at Kidampalayam in Tiruvannamalai district on Tuesday. Sujith, who was walking in a farming land, stepped on the poorly closed borewell and slipped to a depth of 40 feet even as his brother and grandmother watched helplessly. A multi-agency operation was under way.

According to police sources, the incident took place around 4 p.m. in the land owned by Jayaraman who had dug the 260-foot borewell a week ago. It was covered with a gunny bag.

While Fire and Rescue Services personnel commenced digging of a parallel hole, public health service personnel supplied oxygen to the boy. The rescuers, who saved another boy from a borewell near Tirunelveli on Monday, were rushing to the village .
