An unidentified masked man broke open the locks of State Bank India's Gamonthotti branch, near Hosur on Monday.

An attempt by a masked man on Monday night to steal cash and valuables from a bank at Gamonthotti near here failed.

Police sources said a man wearing mask and gloves broke open eight locks of the State Bank of India’s branch but failed in his attempt to steal the money and valuables from the strong room and safe as he could not open it. He left empty-handed from the bank, which is situated just 100 metres from the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway.

Before entering the bank, he snapped the wires connecting one of the nine cameras linked to the CCTV system and deactivated the emergency siren. However, the image of the person was recorded by eight other cameras, an official said.

The CCTV footage showed that the man was inside for 20 minutes.

The branch manager filed a police complaint.

Police officers inspected the spot and forensic experts lifted fingerprints.
