Cultural programmes by students marked the Republic Day celebrations organised by the district administration at the VOC Park Grounds on Monday.
Students of several schools and colleges displayed patriotism as much in their movements as in their expression through their dance performances, after District Collector S. Prabakar hoisted the National flag and accepted a guard of honour presented by police personnel.
In the presence of Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy, the Collector honoured 55 police personnel at different levels with merit awards. As many as 80 employees of other departments including Fire and Rescue Services, Health, Revenue, Agriculture, Horticulture, Education, ICDS, and Survey departments, also received merit awards.
Mr. Prabakar honoured senior citizens and handed over cheques totalling Rs. 80 lakh to beneficiaries of various government schemes on the occasion.
Educational institutions organised celebrations on their campuses. At the Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, N. Sivaprakasam, president Erode Sengunthar Educational Trust, hoisted the flag, and spoke about the need to build a strong India, about Indian growth. Bharathanatyam and other cultural performances with patriotic flavour were rendered.
Likewise, at the M.P. Nachimuthu M. Jaganathan Engineering College, the Republic Day celebrations were initiated with flag hoisting by the College Correspondent Vasantha Sudhanandhen.
A talk on India’s journey to Independence and the significance of Republic Day in establishing equality among citizens by Stalin Gunasekaran, Chairman, Makkal Sinthanai Peravai, marked the celebrations at EBET Group of Institutions. Erode Builder Educational Trust Joint Secretary S.Palanisamy, and Correspondent of EBET Group of Institutions K.P.Duraisamy took part.
