Amma Pharmacy not here: drivers

April 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - Udhagamandalam:

A move to lay the foundation stone for an Amma Pharmacy ran into trouble here on Monday with jeep drivers taking exception to the place chosen to put up the facility.

Even as arrangements were being made by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Department for the foundation stone laying ceremony on the ATC road here, drivers at the jeep stand near the site alienated for the proposed pharmacy objected to the move claiming that it would cut into their space.

The drivers claimed that the space for parking jeeps had already been reduced by putting up a public convenience and if more space is taken the stand would become small.

The Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, R. Murugan, told The Hindu that the civic authorities had surveyed the area and found the spot to be most suitable for putting up an Amma Pharmacy.

The Municipal Chairman, K. Sathyabama, who spoke to the drivers urged them to view the proposed facility as a service and not just a drug store.

With the drivers sticking to their stand it was decided to put the ceremony on hold till talks are held with the drivers.
