Two residents of Ambattur on Monday began an indefinite fast protesting against the opening of a new liquor shop on Ayapakkam Road at T.G. Anna Nagar. The road already has one shop and the new outlet has come up close to that.
C. Veerappan and Jeeva Pugazvendan started the fast on Monday demanding immediate closure of the shop as it is a residential area. “A large number of women are objecting to the shop and want the older one closed as many men, who are labourers in nearby companies, ended up spending their weekly wages at the shop,” said Mr. Pugazvendan.
The road, which is a busy thoroughfare connecting Ambattur with ICF Colony, witnesses heavy traffic, including water tankers. “Many accidents go unnoticed here and a liquor shop would only add to the problems,” said K. Pasupathy, a resident.
The new shop at door number 75, Ayapakkam Road, was closed for a day after residents protested recently. However, it was opened the very next day.
Shop ransacked
Meanwhile, residents of Annai Anjugam Nagar in West Tambaram ransacked a liquor shop which was shifted inside a residential locality.
A police official said a group of residents, along with volunteers of a political outfit, set fire to a liquor shop in Annai Anjugam Nagar. The liquor shop was previously operating on Somangalam High Road.
