The district police on Friday registered two cases against S.R. Gobi, a close aid of former Union Minister, M.K. Alagiri, under Indian Arms Act 1989 for possession of weapons, including an air rifle.
In one of the cases, Gobi’s brother, Maruthu alias Nallamaruthu, too has been booked.
The police said a team of police from Avaniyapuram were conducting vehicle check when they intercepted two vehicles – high-end sports utility vehicles – at around 2.30 a.m. at Avaniyapuram by-pass road.
On seeing the police party, a few persons, including Gobi, and Maruthu, who were travelling in the vehicles tried to flee. However, the police team managed to secure V. Murugesan (35) of Karur district. The police found an air gun and a ‘vel kambu’ (a spear-like weapon).
In this case, the police have booked both S.R. Gobi and his brother, Maruthu. The police are probing the motive behind carrying the weapons at night.
Subsequently, the police, led by the Tirupparankundram Assistant Superintendent of Police, V. Sasi Mohan, and Avaniyapuram Inspector of Police, C. Sethu Mani Mathavan, raided Gobi’s farm house on the bypass road.
The police seized two machetes, one knife, a crow bar, 23 foreign liquor bottles, a currency notes counting machine and playing cards. Gobi has been booked in this case.
However, Gobi’s advocate, C. Dhanapalan, said the police had towed away the two cars parked inside the farm house.
