Former Union Minister, M.K. Alagiri, expelled from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), sprung another surprise on Thursday by meeting his half-sister and MP, Kanimozhi, in a bid to muster support within the DMK that jettisoned him for anti-party activities.
Mr. Alagiri met Ms. Kanimozhi at her CIT colony residence in the city when they are believed to have discussed various matters including the recent developments that eventually led to his dismissal, for nearly 40 minutes.
The tête-à-tête assumes significance in the backdrop of Ms. Kanimozhi sulking in recent days in the wake of some of her deserving supporters, like Helen Davidson, the sitting MP from Kanyakumari, not getting party ticket to contest the coming Lok Sabha election.
Candidate selection
Mr. Alagiri had also been raising the issue of “poor selection” of DMK candidates for the polls, even alleging irregularities in the process almost entirely overseen by his younger brother and party Treasurer, M.K. Stalin.
This apparently emerged as a connect point during his talks.
However, it is learnt that Mr. Alagiri could not get any assurance from Ms. Kanimozhi, who had only requested him to remain calm and not to indulge in any activity that would hurt the DMK leader and their father, M. Karunanidhi.
Significantly, throughout the conversation, Mr. Alagiri made no complaints about Mr. Karunanidhi. Later, Ms. Kanimozhi briefed the party leader about the meeting.
