Former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri, MP, who was suspended from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday for anti-party activities, on Sunday called upon his supporters to remain calm and expressed the hope that his camp would eventually triumph.
Mr. Alagiri thanked his supporters from Madurai and Theni districts, who gave him a rousing welcome at the Madurai airport. He invited them for his birthday celebration in the city on Thursday (January 30).
Before leaving for Madurai, the former Union Minister told reporters that his birthday would be celebrated in a grand manner in Madurai. Assistance would be distributed to the poor and the needy.
Hundreds of persons gathered outside the Madurai airport on Sunday evening. They raised slogans, hailing Mr. Alagiri.
Among those who were at the airport were former Deputy Mayors, ‘Misa’ Pandian and P.M. Mannan, former MLA, S.S. Ghouse Basha and the suspended party leader in Madurai Corporation, M.L. Raj.
Mr. Alagiri’s supporters did not show any regret or disappointment over his suspension from party. “Soon, there will be a way out of the trouble,” said a senior leader.
A large number of the persons present did not sport the traditional white shirt and dhoti, but multi-colour shirts and jeans. They took Mr. Alagiri in a procession of motorbikes and four-wheelers from the airport to his residence at Sathya Sai Nagar.
