The condition of the tusker which has an abscess on its leg at Kondanur near Anaikatti improved on Sunday following the treatment given by the veterinary team of the Forest Department on Saturday.

Officials said the elephant, aged between 20-25, seemed active on Sunday and moved to the forest boundary.

Continuing the treatment given to the elephant, the veterinary team gave the animal fruits stuffed with medicines. Forest staff persisted with the diet of fodder, sugar cane, banana, and jaggery.

On finding that the elephant had an abscess on its left foreleg, forest staff had administered antibiotics and other drugs using darts.

But they said its condition would improve only after a surgery.

The animal would be observed for a day and a decision would be taken in consultation with senior department officials on tranquillising it for further treatment, said District Forest Officer N. Satheesh.

On Sunday evening, the Forest Department brought kumkiPaari from the Chadivayal camp to Kondanur to assist the veterinary team. Sources said that a veterinary team from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve headed by senior surgeon E. Vijayaraghavan will come on Monday to assist the Coimbatore team headed by veterinary surgeon E.N.
